John Cox

1st Vice-President

John Cox has served as a Truancy Interventionist with the Regional Office of Education #21, in Illinois, since 2021, supporting the school districts of Herrin, Marion, and Crab Orchard. In this role, he works closely with students, families, and educators to improve attendance, remove barriers to success, and ensure that every student has the opportunity to thrive academically and personally.

John is a 26½-year veteran of the Illinois Department of Corrections, where he advanced through the ranks as Correctional Officer, Lieutenant, Shift Supervisor, Assistant Warden, and Warden. His experience in leadership and behavior management has provided him with a strong foundation for working with youth and families in a proactive, supportive manner.

Following his retirement from the Department of Corrections in 2018, John continued his commitment to public service as Park Superintendent for the Herrin Park District before joining ROE #21. His focus remains on promoting student engagement, accountability, and positive connections between home and school.

A lifelong resident of Herrin, Illinois, John graduated from Herrin High School in 1986 and earned a degree in Business Administration. He is an active member of the International Association of Truancy and Dropout Prevention (IATDP) and is passionate about helping students reach their full potential through consistency, compassion, and community collaboration.

John and his wife are the proud parents of one daughter, three sons, and a grandson. In his free time, he enjoys boating, hunting, attending sporting events, and cheering on his beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
